Shin-hee Chin returns as the Raymer Society's Artist-in-Residence at the Red Barn Studio Museum December 22-January 31. Additionally, she is privileged to serve as one of three jurors for the European Quilt Competition. Below is her statement for the upcoming exhibition:
Threads of Life
European Patchwork Meeting 2025
"My work, Threads of Life, at the European Patchwork Meeting 2025 reflects a deep respect for the intricate bond between humanity and nature. Through the quiet, deliberate practice of hand stitching, I seek to honor the wisdom and resilience of natural systems while contemplating our shared fragility and interconnectedness.
Using fiber, thread, and stitch, I embrace the humble act of sewing as a way to connect with nature’s rhythms. Each stitch represents a moment of reflection, a gesture of care, and a recognition of the patterns—both visible and hidden—that sustain life. This slow and meditative process allows me to approach creation with mindfulness, drawing inspiration from the harmony and balance within the natural world.
The layering of stitches creates texture and depth, echoing the complexity of life itself. It is a quiet collaboration between will and chance, control and surrender, and art and nature. I see hand stitching as a way to bridge divides—between East and West, tradition and innovation, human effort and the wisdom of the earth—bringing together these elements into a unified whole.
Through Threads of Life, I hope to offer a gentle reminder of our shared place within the larger tapestry of existence. This work is a small gesture of gratitude for the beauty and resilience of nature, and a celebration of the delicate yet enduring connections that bind us to one another and the world around us."
